LEAD PASTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Kirksville Assembly of God recognizes that God calls pastors to serve in an executive capacity while giving leadership to the finances, administrations, volunteers, and spiritual vision of the church. It is our desire to create a job description that clarifies minimal expectations while also leaving margin for a pastor's unique spiritual gifts, natural abilities and spiritual vision. That would include:


  1. Character and ministerial endorsements. In addition to the pastoral qualifications listed in scriptures like 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4, per Kirksville Assembly’s By-Laws the pastor shall be licensed or ordained, and in good standing with both the General Council and the District Council, holding a current fellowship card.
  2. Overseer of the church. The lead pastor as the overseer of the church is responsible for setting vision and directing staff and ministries as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the church (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, 1 Peter 5:1-4)
  3. Preaching and teaching. The lead pastor is the primary preacher/teacher in what takes place during Sunday morning services and supervises the doctrine taught in any discipleship applications the church may have. It would also involve, either directly or indirectly, approving all guest speakers, teachers, small group leaders, substitutes, and curriculum on a church wide level.
  4. Establishing and communicating visions The lead pastor is responsible for setting, casting, mobilizing, and communicating new vision.
  5. Leadership. The lead pastor provides executive leadership to manage the staff, board, and volunteers. This would also include any organizational roles and responsibilities outline in our church’s governing documents (constitution or bylaws) or legal requirements as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
  6. Administration. The lead pastor ensures that effective policies, procedures, and accountability structures are in place to manage the ministries, finances, facilities, and governance of the church.
  7. Pastoral Care. The lead pastor mobilizes people, platforms, and volunteers to provide care, counseling, weddings, funerals, baptisms, baby dedications, and other needed ministries.
  8. Delegation. In every church, some of the pastor’s responsibilities are direct (performed by the pastor)while others are indirect (delegated by the pastor but performed by staff and volunteers).
  9. Pastoral Duties
    1. Shall be the spiritual overseer of the assembly and shall direct its activities.
    2. Shall be recognized as a member of the church board, president of the assembly, and shall act as chair of all the business meetings of the assembly and of the church board.
    3. Shall provide for all services of the assembly and shall specifically arrange for all special meetings, conventions, and ministry campaigns. No person shall be invited to speak or preaching the assembly without his approval.
    4. Shall, as chair of the church board, be chair of the nominating committee for the selection of deacons nominees. The pastor shall privately interview those nominated, ascertaining their eligibility and availability to serve as deacons in order to make a recommendation to the board.
    5. Should oversee a training class at least once a year on the responsibilities of the church board, deacons, secretary, treasurer, and other church leaders. Such a training course shall be based upon the scriptural directives for church leadership and the church bylaws.
    6. Shall be an ex officio member of all committees

PASTORAL PROFILE

  Position Summary:

The lead pastor of Kirksville Assembly  Church is responsible for the overall spiritual and executive leadership of Kirksville Assembly’s congregation and staff, the fulfillment of Kirksville Assembly’s purpose and mission, the alignment of Kirksville Assembly’s values, and the realization of Kirksville Assembly’s goals. Position is accountable to the Kirksville Assembly Leadership Team (Board)

Lead Pastor Qualifications:

  • Has a heart for worship, evangelism, discipleship, teaching, and conversion/salvation growth.
  • Called and determined to see the establishment of God’s kingdom in our Assembly, in our community, in our country, and in our world.
  • Is a visionary leader of leaders and a builder of people who can employ, develop, and release people in their areas of strength.
  • Meets the scriptural prerequisites found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1, 1 Peter 5:2, and Matthew 28:19-20.
  • Shall hold an Assemblies of God (AG) credential at the licensed or ordained level (preferred ordained).
  • Has a proven record of pastoral leadership, preferably having served as the lead pastor or senior associate pastor.
  • Has a healthy marriage, existing accountability structures and plan to invest in their marriage on an ongoing basis.

Worship Style:

  • Does not necessarily have to possess musical skills or vocal ability; however, they must be a fervent, Spirit-filled, charismatic worshiper who is supportive of a variety of both contemporary and traditional expressions of biblical worship.
  • Seeks to encourage the use of the manifestation gifts of the Holy Spirit within corporate worship.

Pulpit Ministry and Communication Skills

  • Can motivate our congregation to fulfill the eternal purposes of God and the vision of our assembly through the preaching of anointed, life-applicable, and scripturally based sermons.
  • Strong Bible based ministry, focus on salvation invitation, altar calls, and discipleship.
  • Is the main speaker at services but shares the pulpit and provides opportunity for others to develop.
  • Is passionate about sharing and teaching God’s Word in an environment where sermons are recorded and distributed through video links and the website.
  • Can develop and clearly communicate the vision and missional priorities of the church.
  • Visionary for church future with property development and building.
  • Is proficient in all forms of communication and supporting technologies.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with conflict resolution and has strong people skills.

Administrative and Leadership Skills:

  • Can develop a management leadership team to lead and execute Kirksville Assembly’s activities, ensuring that all required skills are developed.
  • Can establish and promote teamwork and relationship as core values of staff and volunteers.
  • Possesses efficient time management skills required to accomplish objectives in a timely manner.

Pastoral Care and Focus:

  • Can build, teach, and develop a core group of leaders who would assist in meeting the needs of our people and extending God’s kingdom.
  • Is a visionary leader who can deploy people in their areas of strengths and keep them accountable to the vision and goals of Kirksville Assembly .
  • Can nurture strong relationships with the Kirksville Assembly Leadership Team members and together pursue a healthy, functioning team environment.
  • Champions and guards the spiritual and doctrinal values of Kirksville Assembly.

Community Involvement, Evangelism, and World Missions:

  • Considers local, national, and international missions and community outreach a priority and a core value of the church.
  • Encourages the church to be involved with community events that influenced the lives of all the people in the local communities that Kirksville Assembly serves.
  • Promotes and expands the work of world missions and the regular support of Kirksville Assembly’s missionaries

  1. Summary - Kirksville is a unique place. It is a small town in rural Missouri but with huge global connections. It is typical in its small town nature both positive and negative. But it is atypical with the universities and migrant populations in terms of its diversity and global connections.

    1. Worship team - a folk-rock blend that easily combines traditional hymns and modern songs
    2. Children’s (Children’s church, Royal Rangers, Missionettes), Youth, Young Adult, Women’s ministries
    3. Connection Groups - church groups meet Sunday mornings (some still call them Sunday School), 1st and 3rd Sunday nights in leader’s homes, 2 classes on Monday nights, and a Wednesday night adult class.

Local Ministries - Drug Court, AM Housing (a homeless shelter/recovery house started by the previous pastor that we are connected with but not directly responsible for), French speaking church of AG Congolese immigrants (they are a sister church and we are connected with them still, ie. they send several of their children to our church for Wednesday night NextGen meetings, they also invite our pastors to preach and pray at their services and weddings), a fledgling College and Career outreach to college age students.

  11. Immediate Neighborhood 
    1. There is an apartment complex just up the street that is a ripe and ready mission field we have yet to venture in. 
    2. Kirksville is a college town with four universities (Truman State University, A.T. Still University, Missouri School of Dentistry, and Moberly Area Community College. 
    3. Kirksville is a diverse and international community with immigrants from Latin America, China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, etc. 
    4. We have upper-middle class families as well as abject poverty. 
    5. There is a massive drug problem in our community. We have outreaches functioning in the Drug Court and have seen several lives changed as a result.
    6. Kirksville is politically diverse with both staunch conservatives and more liberal-minded people. We have a politically diverse congregation as well.
  12. Community Information
    1. There has been a recent and dramatic migration of families from Africa. They are mostly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We have some families in our church, as well as a specific Congolese congregation that recently purchased their own building. They are Assembly of God and we have a close relationship. We invite each other to special occasions and fellowships.
    2. Our community is also seeing the expansion of the Kraft Foods plant which makes Kirksville the largest supplier of the world’s cold cuts. We have also experienced a wave of new businesses opening up in our town as we serve as an economic hub for the region.
    3. Education - The Kirksville school district is Accredited with Distinction by the State of Missouri and have been for many years. There are several top-rated colleges as well. Truman State University, A.T. Still University (a medical institution), a Dental School, as well as the Moberly Area Community College. These institutions have a large student body which presents a major opportunity for ministry that we have yet to tap into. 
    4. Medical - Northeast Regional Medical Center is a large, quality hospital located in our city.
    5. Challenges - Kirksville is located in Adair County, which historically is one of the leading counties in America for Methamphetamine production and usage. Drugs in general are a problem. Poverty is also a major problem.
